Thinking of Switching Careers? Read This First

A career change can be one of the most rewarding decisions of your life — or a costly mistake. Before you hand in your resignation, here's how to evaluate whether the leap is truly right for you.

Distinguish Between a Bad Job and a Bad Career

Many people want to change careers when what they actually need is a new job, a new manager, or a new workplace. Before you commit to starting over, ask yourself: Is it the work itself I hate, or the environment in which I'm doing it?

If you love the work but loathe the culture, a lateral move to a better company may be all you need. Career changes are costly in time, money, and emotional energy — exhaust the lighter options first.

Test Before You Leap

The best way to evaluate a career change is to try the new field before committing to it. Take on freelance work, volunteer projects, or side projects in your target area. Shadow someone who does the work you think you want. Interview people in that field honestly.

"The goal is not to find work you love every minute of. It's to find work where the hard parts are worth it."

Build a Financial Runway

Career transitions often come with a temporary pay cut — especially if you're re-entering at a junior level or pursuing further education. Before you quit, build 6–12 months of living expenses as a financial cushion. This gives you the freedom to make the right decision rather than the urgent one.

Leverage Your Transferable Skills

You are not starting from zero. Skills like communication, project management, analysis, leadership, and client management are valuable in virtually every field. Identify your transferable skills and lead with them when positioning yourself for your new career.
